Endhiran The Robot is like a Will Smith’s 2004 movie: What’s common between Rajnikanth’s soon-to-release sci-fi extravaganza and Will Smith’s 2004 movie besides the title, Robot? Turns out, the android used in the Shankar- tri-lingual is the one seen in I Robot over six years ago.

A source associated with our Rs 150 crore opus reveals that it took Shankar nearly three years to get a fix on the robot for his Rajnikanth-Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer. Since the animatronics and visual effects were being created at Los Angeles’ Stan Winston Studio in Los Angeles, the team wanted a top-of-the-line model.

And once he saw this robot, he wanted it immediately, never mind that it cost Rs 6 crore to rent it out.

An extra Rs 4 crore went towards acquiring two dummies. Fortunately, producer Kalanithi Maran didn’t crib about the additional Rs 10 crore expenditure.

“We wanted only the best robot for our film,” says Shankar. “And this advanced model we stumbled upon at Stan Winston Studio was perfect. We were stunned to see the things it could accomplish.”

Interestingly, Shankar wasn’t aware that his android had been used in I Robot. He learnt about the ‘connect’ only a couple of days after he began filming. “When I heard that it had been featured in Will Smith’s movie, it proved that we’d made the right choice,” he says. “I hope the audience will endorse our opinion.”

On October 2, Robot in Hindi and Enthiran in Tamil and Telugu will open in theatres.

What is popping? It is a kind of street dance which is based on the technique of quickly contracting and relaxing muscles to cause a jerk in the dancer’s body. Sounds tough, doesn’t it! But Ash and Rajini were game for it.

Yes, apart from Rajini, choreographer Remo D'Souza taught the dance to Ash as well. Like Rajini, the actress too is trying out popping for the first time. But they were quick to grasp the steps and the end result amazed all.

“Yes, this is the first time that you would see Rajini and Ash attempt popping. The energy and finesse that they bring on to this dance sequence is something to eagerly look forward to. It was a delight choreographing this song,” Remo is quoted as saying.

As Remo enjoyed working on the song, we hope the audience too would love to see it on silver screen.

Recently, while shooting together for ‘Endhiran’, Aishwarya, who was keen on observing the veteran actor’s trademark scene, pulled a prank by repeatedly making same mistakes, so that Rajinikanth continued tossing his cigarette in the air.

Talking to a news daily, a source said, “Rajinikanth’s trademark style of tossing the cigarette, is loved by Ash. She could ask him once or twice at max to enact this scene for her, but she wanted to see it repeatedly. Thus she purposely kept making mistakes while shooting her scene; Rajinikanth ended up enacting his patented stunt six times.”

“It was after the wrap-up of the shoot that Ash mentioned to Rajinikanth about how much she loves the way he does this particular stunt, and she was bluffing so that she could see him do this time and again. Rajinikanth burst out laughing and took it in his stride,” the source said.

When contacted Shankar, the director of the film confirmed the news and said, “We only realised while shooting that Ash was such a big fan of Rajini sir.”

Our source said, “Rajnikant was initially reluctant to attend the event.

In fact, he kept insisting that he wanted to be kept of out of it. He doesn’t like to be anything that he is not in real life. And he is actually an extremely shy person. However, the marketing team felt that Hindi market has a very different sensibility. Eventually, Rajnikant agreed to go to Mumbai.”

Apparently, it was director Shankar, who convinced Rajnikant to go for the music launch. The team was in fact, quite shocked at his lastminute decision.

Incidentally, Robot (Endhiran) is the biggest-budget film to be ever produced in India. It was made on a whopping Rs 150 crore-budget. The trilingual film, releasing in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi simultaneously, has Rajnikant paired opposite Aishwarya Rai.
